Haggai 1:6 You have planted much but harvest little. You eat but are not satisfied. You drink but are still thirsty. You put on clothes but cannot keep warm. Your wages disappear as though you were putting them in pockets filled with holes!
The Israelites had returned to the land of Israel with permission and instructions to rebuild God’s Temple; however, they were living in luxury while they neglected God’s Temple. The harder they worked on their own homes, the less they had because they were neglecting their spiritual lives.
Today, we consider our bodies the Temple of God because He resides in us. But we put more time, money and effort into building our houses and filling them with the latest fashions, electronics and gadgets while neglecting to fill our souls with God’s Word. The harder we work to fulfill our human desires, the less joy and fulfillment we have because we are neglecting what is most important.
Also, if we are putting all of our money into our selfish desires while neglecting God’s work, we are neglecting God and failing in our responsibility to further the Kingdom of God. If we continually fill our bodies with junk and our minds with filth, our souls will shrivel up and be no good for God. However, if we fill our bodies with the bounty of God’s blessings and our minds with God’s Word, then our souls will be filled with the joy of the Lord and our lives will be blessed beyond measure. When we put God first, He will provide for our deepest needs. If we put God in any other place, all of our efforts will be futile. See Moses’ prediction in Deuteronomy 28:38-45.
