Fringe People (April 23, 2013)

“I recently heard about a woman who, when her heart is prompted, makes a point of thanking or complimenting service people–busboys, hotel maids, cooks, baristas–those people at the fringe of our lives, largely unnoticed and unappreciated.” {pp. 115-116, “The 10-Second Rule“}

I try to always thank the cashiers at Wal-Mart and Kroger and any other place I may shop.  No matter how much it annoys me to shop at Wal-Mart, it’s not the cashier’s fault.  He/She is only following management’s procedures which is how it is at most places.

I am a secretary.  Clients meet with the attorney, he dictates what needs to be done, and I get it prepared.  And I’m going to share a little secret–you need to treat the secretary with as much respect as the attorney because he/she is the one standing between you and the attorney.  The secretary can tell within five minutes what kind of person you are.  The moral of the story is to treat others the way you want to be treated.  Don’t treat them like the help, or your own personal servant.

Everyone has a bad day every now and then.  Give them the benefit of the doubt and say a kind word or leave an encouraging note.

[Read Luke 18]

Luke 18:41-43 “What do you want me to do for you?” “Lord,” he said, “I want to see!”  And Jesus said, “All right, receive your sight! Your faith has healed you!” Instantly the man could see, and he followed Jesus, praising God.  And all who saw it praised God, too.

Jesus came to Earth to save all who were lost–not just the Jews, or the wealthy, or the good.  He came for thieves, liars, cheaters, prostitutes, the pious, the righteous, the fringe–everyone who would acknowledge Him and His Father in Heaven.

Father  God,
Thank You for sending Your Son to Earth to save me–someone on the fringe–an imperfect person in an imperfect world.  Without You, I would still be a lost soul with no hope. Thank You for the hope Christ gives.  Amen.
