Fellowship with God and love for others (March 27, 2013)

1 John 5:20-21 And we know that the Son of God has come, and he has given us understanding so that we can know the true God.  And now we live in fellowship with the true God because we live in fellowship with his Son, Jesus Christ.  He is the only true God, and he has eternal life. Dear children, keep away from anything that might take God’s place in your hearts.

For the past several mornings, it has been difficult to concentrate on reading the Word.  Preparing for vacation and the busyness of life wants to crowd in with the message I’m reading.  Of course, Satan would love nothing more than to steal the message God wants to give me.  Today, I had to stop and pray for help to curb the distractions and that I could hear God’s message.

John’s message in 1 John focuses on love.  God is love.  John reminds us that we are required to love others if we seek to be obedient to God.  Loving others is the measurement of true godliness.  If we have no love, we are a clanging cymbal.

To live in fellowship with God, we must love Him, seek Him, obey Him and put Him first.  Remove all things that might take God’s place in your heart.  It’s easy to spot an idol–it’s the first thing you think about and the one thing you think you can’t live without.

Father God,
Idol worship is common today.  We have more things in our lives to take Your place.    Remind me that You are the only One I can’t live without.  Life on earth is short.  I want to spend eternity with You.  Amen.
