Jesus’ Prayer (March 18, 2013)

John 17:14-19 “I have given them your word.  And the world hates them because they do not belong to the world, just as I do not belong to the world.  I’m not asking you to take them out of the world, but to keep them safe from the evil one.  They do not belong to this world any more than I do.  Make them holy by your truth; teach them your word, which is truth.  Just as you sent me unto the world, I am sending them into the world.  And I give myself as a holy sacrifice for them so they can be made holy by your truth.”

John 17 is one of my favorite chapters in the Bible.  At a time when Jesus was preparing for His death, he was thinking about His followers.  He was also praying for us.  John 17:20 “I am praying not only for these disciples but for all who will ever believe in me through their message.

Jesus did not ask God to keep us separate from the world and it’s trouble.  He asked that God protect us from the snares of the evil one while we are here.  We have been sent into the world to gather souls for Christ–to bring believers into the family of God.

Father God,
The world is a tough place filled with evil, but we get a glimpse of your holiness and truth in the lives of believers.  Help my light shine for you so others will believe.  Amen.
