Keep the Sabbath (February 22, 2013)

Isaiah 58:13 Keep the Sabbath day holy.
Don’t pursue your own interests on that day,

but enjoy the Sabbath and speak of it with delight as the Lord’s holy day.
Honor the Sabbath in everything you do on that day,
and don’t follow your own desires or talk idly.

When you work eight hours a day five days a week, it’s easy to want to use the two days of the weekend to catch up on household chores and personal desires.  In our busy world, it’s difficult to fit in everything we need to do much less those things we want to do, so we use the Sabbath to get them done.  It’s so easy to justify staying home from church as if God would look down with pride to see His children doing “good” things on the Sabbath.  The fact of the matter is that those things we strive to get done will always need to be done.  If we used our time wisely, we have all the time we need to get the necessary things done.

The busyness and business of the world is tiresome.  That is why God ordained one day to be used to rest in Him so that we can gather strength (from Him) for the week ahead.

When I was growing up, most stores and businesses were closed on Sundays.  Today, Sunday is treated like any other day of the week.  Maybe we should try taking a Sabbath day and honor God and see how that changes our lives.

Father God,
If my priority is truly honoring You, then I will set aside one day to spend with You in addition to our daily times together.  How often I forget that you are waiting patiently for me daily to come meet with You and share a special time.  Thank You that I am able to approach You freely just as I am.  Help me honor You by honoring the Sabbath day You provided for just that purpose.  Amen.
